Content Standards & Classification

1. Registration as an online distributor

An online distributor of films and publications in South Africa must register with the Film and Publication Board. This platform is registered under:

2. Every post carries an age classification

When you publish, you choose the classification. It is displayed to every viewer on the post, and it decides whether the age gate has to be satisfied before the media is shown. Classifying honestly is a condition of using the platform; deliberately under-classifying explicit material is treated as a serious breach.

Suitable for all ages. No nudity, sexual content, strong language or violence.

Not suitable for under 13s. Mild language, or themes a younger viewer would not follow.

Not suitable for under 16s. Strong language, suggestive content, or partial non-sexual nudity.

18

Adults only. Nudity, strong sexual references or explicit language, short of explicit sexual conduct.

X18

Adults only, restricted distribution. Explicit sexual conduct. Served only behind an age check, and every grant of access is registered for twelve months.

Posts rated 18 or X18 are shown only to viewers who have confirmed they are 18 or older. For X18-classified posts we additionally keep a register of every account granted access, for twelve months, as the 2022 Regulations require — see the privacy notice.

If we believe a post is misclassified we may reclassify it. You will be told, and you may dispute it through Complaints & Disputes. Classification decisions of the FPB itself are appealable to the Film and Publication Appeal Tribunal.

3. Consent is the second condition

Lawfulness alone is not enough. Everyone appearing in what you post must have agreed both to the content being made and to it appearing here, and you must be able to prove it. What you have to hold on file is set out in Consent & Age Records.

Consent can be withdrawn. If someone in your content withdraws consent, take the content down. If they tell us instead, we will.

4. Prohibited without exception

None of the following may be published, and none of it is a classification setting — it is content that must not exist here.

• Child sexual abuse material. Any sexual or nude depiction of a person under 18, or apparently under 18 — including drawn, animated, simulated or AI-generated depictions. Offences under sections 24A and 24B of the Films and Publications Act and the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act 32 of 2007. We remove it, preserve the evidence, terminate the account and report it to the South African Police Service and the FPB. There is no appeal.
• Intimate images published without consent, including sexual deepfakes of an identifiable real person. Offences under section 16 of the Cybercrimes Act 19 of 2020 and section 18F of the Films and Publications Act.
• Sexual violence, coercion, trafficking and bestiality — the FPB's “XX” band, refused classification.
• Propaganda for war, incitement to imminent violence, and advocacy of hatred based on race, ethnicity, gender or religion that constitutes incitement to cause harm — section 16(2) of the Constitution, and section 18F(1) of the Act.
• Content that identifies a victim of a sexual offence without their consent, or a child involved in criminal proceedings.
• Harassment, threats, doxxing, impersonation, spam, scams and malware.

5. Payment for age-restricted content

Access to X18 content is granted through a paid subscription or a paid unlock, settled from a wallet funded by card or bank transfer in the account holder's own name. The 2022 Regulations call for a child-secure payment method for age-restricted content; that is why it is not made available free to an unverified visitor.

6. How we enforce

• Reports. Any signed-in user can report a post or account. Reports reach a moderation queue with the media inline.
• Takedown notices. Anyone, account or not, may lodge a formal notice under section 77 of the ECT Act — see Takedown Notice.
• Automated checks. Uploads are validated by file content, and where the operator has configured it, images are screened for explicit content so that misclassification is caught early.
• Actions. Reclassification, hiding a post, deleting it, restricting an account, suspension, termination, and referral to the authorities. Each administrative action is written to an audit log.
